Our Story
My Aunt Ann Leonard's English toffee recipe was legendary in my family. She, my grandmother's older sister, was one of 13 children who were raised in the Riverside, California, area during the turn of the 20th century and later. The faded, original recipe called for 5-cent Hershey bars.
My sister began making the toffee in high school and I followed suit shortly after. The recipe is not difficult, there are four main ingredients, for which I've named the company: chocolate, nuts, butter and sugar. I chose the name ChoNuBuSu as a nod to the simple purity of the recipe. The technique is the tricky part with toffee. Despite making it for more than 30 years, I am still always trying to make it even better.
I have traditionally only made it during the holidays and years after seeing a former coworker or acquaintance, it's not uncommon for them to say, "I still think about that toffee you made. It's the best I've ever had."
Selling it commercially was always a dream but I never knew quite how to approach it. After years as a business and lifestyles writer, I've interviewed and profiled hundreds of entrepreneurs. Finally I decided it was time for me to take the plunge myself.
I am committed to using the highest-quality ingredients available.
